Flames enjoy another lopsided victory in shortened contest
San Marcos Hill Country hosted senior night before the start of its baseball game against Faith Academy of Marble Falls April 8, so the Flames braced for the Rams’ best effort.
Needless to say, Hill Country found few answers thanks to sophomore pitcher Kade Shaw, who led the Flames (5-2, 3-0 District 3-2A Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) to a 16-0 win in a contest that ended after three innings.
Shaw had an in-park grand slam and finished with 5 RBIs. Carter Fromberg and Dylan Offutt each had 2 RBIs.
On the mound, Shaw struck out eight of the 10 batters he faced and issued two walks.
“On senior night, they had a lot of momentum,” Faith head coach Zakk Revelle said. “We only scored three runs in the first inning. And we struck out two to end that inning.”
But Faith exploded for 13 runs in the second inning. Kolton Steele and Case Coleman each had singles, while Cross Sanchez drew a walk. That set up Shaw.
Revelle said that as Shaw was headed to third, he decided to send the Flame home because of his speed and seeing the outfielder hadn’t set up yet to throw home.
“Kade is a really good athlete,” the coach said. “They’re going to have to make a really good throw. For them, that’s a really big back breaker. That’s tough to come back.”
This contest was another strong offensive performance for Flames, who are exhibiting one important element Revelle is emphasizing, he said.
“Anytime we’re on base, we want to make them get you out,” he said. “We don’t want to give up bases on defense, and we want them to get us out: no striking out looking, not running all the way through first base, not paying attention (to where the ball is, leaving the base early, or other mental mishaps).”
Next up for Faith is a home game against Bryan Allen Academy at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at the YMCA of the Highland Lakes, 1601 S. Water St. in Burnet.
“The goal for this group is to try to get better, and that’s what they’re doing,” Revelle said. “They’re really embracing one pitch at a time, one out at a time. We want to make them get you out.”
